For a
data centre construction project
, the EHS (Environment, Health & Safety) team has a critical role
because the work involves high-risk activities such as electrical
installation, lifting, work at height, hot work, excavation, confined
spaces, and large numbers of contractors.
Key EHS responsibilities for construction safety

EHS Planning & Management
-
Develop and implement the project EHS Plan.
-
Establish site safety rules, procedures, and emergency arrangements.
-
Conduct project-specific risk assessments and ensure controls are
implemented.
-
Set safety KPIs, targets, and reporting requirements.
-
Legal & Compliance
-
Ensure compliance with applicable Indian HSE laws, regulations,
permits, and client requirements.
-
Maintain statutory records, inspections, licenses, and certificates.
-
Coordinate with authorities and auditors when required.
-
Contractor Safety Management
-
Prequalify contractors based on EHS performance and capability.
-
Review contractor EHS plans, method statements, JSA/JHA and risk
assessments.
-
Conduct contractor induction before mobilization.
-
Monitor subcontractor compliance through inspections and audits.
-
Stop unsafe work when necessary.
-
Site Safety Inspection
-
Conduct daily site inspections and regular EHS audits.
-
Identify unsafe acts and unsafe conditions.
-
Track corrective and preventive actions until closure.
-
Maintain inspection and audit records.
-
High-Risk Activity Control

electrical work, excavation, work at height, lifting, etc.

Verify that required isolations and precautions are in place before
work starts.

Close permits after completion and verification.

Electrical Safety
-
Ensure temporary and permanent electrical systems are properly
controlled.
-
Verify grounding/earthing, protection devices and electrical panels.
-
Implement LOTO and electrical isolation procedures.
-
Control access during energization and commissioning.
-
Establish clear electrical safety boundaries and warning signage.
