Piping Material Engineer – Job Description
1. Role Title
Piping Material Engineer
Reports To:
Lead Piping Engineer / Engineering Manager
2. Summary
The Piping Material Engineer is responsible for the specification, selection,
and standardization of piping materials, components, and specialty items to
ensure safety, code compliance, and reliability for industrial projects. The
role involves developing material classes, preparing material requisitions,
reviewing vendor documents, and ensuring alignment with project standards,
applicable codes, and client requirements. The Piping Material Engineer also
collaborates closely with piping design, process, mechanical, procurement,
inspection and construction teams to deliver fit‑for‑purpose solutions.
3. Key Responsibilities
Piping Material–Specific Responsibilities

Develop, maintain, and update piping material specifications, and piping
class sheets.

Prepare pressure containment (wall thickness, branch reinforcement) and
initial line sizing calculations.

Provide input and assist in development of P&IDs.

Prepare Bills of Material (BOM), material take‑offs, line and valve
designation tables.

Select appropriate piping materials based on process requirements,
temperature, pressure, corrosion, and client standards.
-
Prepare and review material requisitions (MRs), technical bid evaluations
(TBEs), and purchase recommendations.

Review and approve vendor drawings and documents for valves, fittings,
specialty items, gaskets, studs, and flexible elements.

Review and provide input to other discipline documentation to ensure
alignment with piping interfaces.

Ensure compliance with ASME, ASTM, API, MSS‑SP and other relevant
international codes/standards.

Coordinate with the process team to ensure correct material selection for
corrosive, erosive, or hazardous services.

Work with the piping design team to ensure material compatibility and
alignment with routing and constructability.

Develop valve datasheets, specialty item datasheets, and piping component
catalogues.

Resolve technical queries related to materials during engineering,
procurement, fabrication, and construction phases.

Support inspection and QA/QC teams with material compliance issues and
vendor clarification.

Support construction team with technical queries related to materials.
-
Participate in HAZOP, model reviews, and discipline coordination workshops.
4. Qualifications and Experience
Essential
-
B.Tech / B.E. in Mechanical Engineering or Metallurgy.
-
5-20 years of experience in piping material engineering in EPC or industrial
project environments.
-
Strong knowledge of ASME B31.3 / B31.1, ASME Section II, ASTM standards, API
standards, and MSS specifications.

Experience in developing piping classes, valve specifications, and specialty
item datasheets.

Familiarity with corrosive and high‑temperature service material selection.

Ability to interpret P&IDs, piping isometrics, vendor datasheets, and
material standards.
-
Experience coordinating with procurement, inspection, and multidiscipline
engineering teams.
-
Strong communication, documentation, and technical writing skills.
Preferred
-
Experience working on mining, chemical, oil & gas, or heavy industrial
facilities.

Familiarity with non-metalic piping materials.
-
Knowledge of SAP/Smart Materials/SPMat or similar material management
systems.

Experience with valve sizing basics and specialty piping items (bellows,
strainers, dampers).
-
Experience in line sizing and/or hydraulic/pump sizing calculations.
-
P&ID development and coordination.
-
Exposure to material corrosion mechanisms and mitigation techniques.
-
Experience supporting factory acceptance tests (FAT) and vendor quality
surveillance.
