Business Development Manager – Job Description

Role Purpose
The Business Development Manager will be responsible for driving market
expansion, fuel
procurement, and retail network growth in Malawi and the SADC region, with a
strong focus on
hands-on fuel trading, supply chain management, and strategic partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
Market Strategy & Expansion
Develop and execute business development strategies for Malawi and the SADC
region.
Identify new business opportunities and build long-term relationships with key
stakeholders.
Analyze market trends, pricing movements, and competitive dynamics.
Fuel Procurement & Supply Chain
Manage fuel sourcing from key ports in the SADC region, including Dar es
Salaam and Beira.
Negotiate contracts with fuel suppliers, traders, port agents, and logistics
partners.
Monitor supply risks, pricing volatility, and ensure continuity of fuel supply
(diesel, petrol,
lubricants, and bulk fuel).
Retail Network Growth
Lead expansion of retail filling stations and fuel distribution points across
Malawi.
Coordinate with operations, marketing, and finance teams to launch and scale
new sites.
Support operational readiness and commercial viability of new retail outlets.
Stakeholder Engagement
Build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, regulatory
authorities, port
authorities, logistics partners, and key customers.
Represent the company in industry forums, negotiations, and regulatory
discussions.
Reporting & Performance Management
Prepare regular business performance reports, forecasts, and detailed market
analysis.
Define, track, and achieve targets and KPIs related to business growth, sales,
and partnerships.
Required Qualification
Bachelor's degree in business administration, Commerce, Economics,
Engineering, or a related
field.
Minimum Experience (in Years)
Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in fuel trading, petroleum
distribution, or filling
station operations.
Experience must be operational and field-based, not limited to desk-based or
pure sales roles.
Skills Required
Technical / Functional Skills
Deep knowledge of the SADC fuel market and commercial dynamics.
Proven expertise in fuel procurement and bulk fuel supply management.
Strong understanding of key supply hubs including Dar es Salaam and Beira.
Experience handling diesel, petrol, lubricants, and bulk fuel operations.
Behavioral / Soft Skills
Strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
Strategic thinking with a hands-on execution mindset.
Excellent communication, reporting, and relationship-building abilities.
