Purpose of the Role
To lead and own end-to-end production operations across four manufacturing sections — Braiding, Polymer CNC Machining, Special Packing, and Lubricants — ensuring that output targets, quality standards, delivery schedules, and cost budgets are consistently met. The Production Manager is the single point of accountability for shop-floor performance across all four units and is responsible for building a disciplined, data-driven production culture anchored in the principles of 4M management, Lean manufacturing, and continuous improvement. This role reports directly to the Chief of Operations and serves as the operational backbone connecting shop-floor reality to strategic business goals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Production Planning & Execution
• Translate monthly and weekly sales/dispatch plans into executable production schedules across all four sections — Braiding, Polymer CNC Machining, Special Packing, and Lubricants.
• Drive daily production meetings (DPM) to review output vs. plan, address deviations, and re-plan resources in real time.
• Monitor production capacity utilisation, identify bottlenecks, and take corrective action to prevent schedule slippage.
• Coordinate with Planning, Stores, Procurement, and Dispatch to ensure material availability and on-time despatch of finished goods.
• Establish and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all production processes across the four units.
2. 4M Management (Man, Machine, Material, Method)
• Man: Oversee manpower planning, shift allocations, skill mapping, and workforce productivity across all units. Identify training gaps and drive operator skill development programmes.
• Machine: Ensure all production equipment — braiding machines, CNC machining centres, special packing lines, and lubricant blending/filling systems — are operating at optimal efficiency. Coordinate with the maintenance team on breakdowns and PM schedules.
• Material: Monitor raw material consumption, yields, and wastage; enforce first-in-first-out (FIFO) protocols and flag procurement risks ahead of production impact.
• Method: Continuously review and improve production methods, process parameters, and work instructions to reduce cycle times, defects, and rework.
3. Quality Management & Continuous Improvement
• Champion a zero-defect mind set on the shop floor — owning in-process quality, first-pass yield (FPY), and rejection rates across all four sections.
• Lead or co-lead Kaizen events, Six Sigma (DMAIC) projects, and structured problem-solving (8D, Fishbone, 5-Why) to eliminate recurring defects and process inefficiencies.
• Maintain and improve 5S standards across all production areas — conducting regular audits and sustaining audit scores.
• Collaborate with the Quality team to investigate and resolve customer complaints, NCRs (non-conformances), and internal rejections promptly.
• Drive SPC (Statistical Process Control) and use quality data/dashboards to proactively identify trends before they become defects.
• Ensure compliance with ISO 9001:2015 documentation requirements — including control plans, inspection records, and process validation reports.
4. Production Performance & KPI Ownership
• Own and report key production KPIs: output vs. plan, OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), rejection rate, rework %, on-time-in-full (OTIF) delivery, and cost per unit.
• Build and present weekly and monthly production performance dashboards to the Chief of Operations.
• Identify and drive cost reduction initiatives through process optimisation, waste elimination (Muda), and yield improvement.
• Track and reduce unplanned downtime through proactive coordination with the maintenance and engineering teams.
5. People Leadership & Team Development
• Lead, mentor, and develop a multi-section production team — including section supervisors, line leaders, and operators — fostering accountability, discipline, and a continuous improvement culture.
• Conduct structured performance reviews and provide regular feedback to section supervisors and team leaders.
• Drive cross-functional training and multi-skilling initiatives to improve workforce flexibility and reduce single-point dependencies.
• Maintain a positive, safety-first work environment — enforcing all EHS (Environment, Health & Safety) protocols on the shop floor.
6. New Product Introduction (NPI) & Process Development
• Partner with R&D, the Die/Tool Room, and Quality teams during new product introduction — ensuring process readiness, trial execution, and production ramp-up across relevant sections.
• Participate in PFMEA (Process Failure Mode & Effects Analysis) and control plan development for new and modified products.
• Support the marketing/engineering team in validating new equipment, processes, and materials before production release.
7. Reporting & Cross-Functional Coordination
• Report directly to the Chief of Operations with structured, data-backed updates on production performance, issues, and corrective actions.
• Coordinate actively with the Procurement, Stores, Sales, Maintenance, and Quality teams to resolve cross-functional blockers impacting production.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the Chief of Operations from time to time.
Education
• B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or a closely related discipline from a recognized institution.
• Additional certification in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma (Green Belt or Black Belt), or Production/Operations Management is strongly preferred.
Experience
• 10–12 years of progressive, hands-on production experience — with at least 5 years in a production leadership role managing multi-line or multi-section operations.
• Mandatory background in the automotive or auto ancillary industry — with sound understanding of automotive-grade quality standards, production disciplines, and supply chain expectations.
• Proven track record of managing diverse production sections with distinct processes, machines, and materials simultaneously.
• Demonstrable experience in managing multi-shift, multi-section shop floors with 50+ direct and indirect reportees.
• Prior experience in a manufacturing company supplying to export markets or OEM/Tier-1 automotive customers is strongly preferred.
Technical & Functional Skills
• Deep working knowledge of 4M management (Man, Machine, Material, Method) in a manufacturing shop-floor context.
• Proficiency in Lean Manufacturing tools: 5S, Kaizen, VSM (Value Stream Mapping), Poka-Yoke, SMED, and Muda elimination.
• Working knowledge of Six Sigma methodology (DMAIC) and quality tools: SPC, Cp/Cpk, 8D, FMEA, Control Charts, Fishbone, and 5-Why.
• Strong understanding of OEE, production scheduling, capacity planning, and shop-floor MIS/reporting.
• Familiarity with ISO 9001:2015 requirements, IATF 16949 (preferred for automotive background), and documentation disciplines.
• Proficiency in ERP/MES systems for production planning and tracking; MS Excel for data analysis and KPI dashboards.
