Job Title: Assistant Manager - Data Engineering & Platforms

General Purpose of the Position

The Data Platform Administrator will be responsible for managing and optimizing enterprise database systems and building scalable data infrastructure to support digital platforms and operational systems. This role focuses on ensuring database reliability, performance, and security while implementing modern data architectures to enable faster analytics and operational insights.

Job Functions

Database Management: Installation, configuration, maintenance, and performance optimization of all databases (e.g., SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle) in the organization.
Data Warehouse Maintenance & Update: Update and maintain data warehouse infrastructure, including data ingestion, storage, and retrieval mechanisms.
Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution: Proactively identify and resolve database-related issues, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal system functionality.
Scripting and Automation: Develop and maintain scripts to automate repetitive tasks, such as backups, data extraction, and system monitoring.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Engage with business units and internal teams to understand their data-related needs and requirements, and translate them into practical database solutions.
Database Performance Monitoring: Regularly monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement necessary optimizations to ensure optimal system response. Analyse queries and execution plans to improve database performance. Design and maintain indexing strategies and optimize database structures.
Rollout and Implementation: Oversee the smooth rollout of new features and updates, ensuring minimal disruptions to operations. Communicate effectively with relevant stakeholders, including end-users, during the rollout process.
Security and Compliance: Implement security protocols and access controls to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. Implement role-based access control and manage database permissions.
Disaster Recovery: Implement backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.
Data Architecture & Integration: Design and maintain ETL / ELT pipelines for data movement and processing. Implement CDC architectures to enable near real-time data synchronization. Work with Kafka-based streaming architectures for reliable data integration.
Automation & Engineering Support: Develop automation scripts using Python or Bash to support data operations. Work closely with development and analytics teams to support database integrations and data availability.
Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation for database configurations, data models, and data flow processes.

Level of Interaction

Internal interactions with Business (SI) for understanding the data architecture & attributes. Enable reliable data pipelines and datasets. Interact with the IT Development Team around database architecture and integrations.

External Scope of Influence

Collaboration with Technology vendors and partners supporting database and data platform infrastructure.

Knowledge and Abilities

Understanding of Kafka Advanced, Docker, Linux Administration, Bash Scripting and Debezium CDC.
Query Optimization and Performance Tuning.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve database-related issues efficiently.
A proactive approach to continuous learning, staying updated with the latest database technologies, industry trends, and best practices.
Knowledge of database security best practices and data protection regulations.
Ability to understand business requirements and translate them into effective database solutions.
Experience with data lake setup and management, utilizing platforms like Hadoop, AWS S3, or Azure Data Lake.
Proficiency in scripting languages like SQL, Python, or PowerShell to automate tasks and optimize database operations.
Excellent communication and coordination skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Solid analytical and problem-solving abilities to address technical challenges and optimize performance.
