Job Description: Solution Designer – Legacy Application to ServiceNow
Migration
Position Overview
The Solution Designer will lead the end-to-end solution architecture and
design for migrating legacy applications, custom workflow systems, or bespoke
enterprise tools into the ServiceNow platform. This role requires deep
knowledge of ServiceNow (ITSM/CSM/ITOM/ITAM/OM/SOMT), strong architectural
thinking, hands-on design capabilities, and the ability to collaborate across
business, technology, and vendor teams. The Solution Designer acts as the
bridge between business requirements and technical implementation ensuring
scalable, secure, and future-ready ServiceNow solutions.
Key Responsibilities
1. Solution Architecture & Design

Lead the end-to-end architecture for migrating legacy systems to the
ServiceNow platform.

Analyse existing legacy system architecture, data models, business
processes, integrations, and user journeys.
-
Define target-state architecture including data models, process models,
workflow orchestration, integrations, UI/UX, and reporting.
-
Prepare Solution Design Documents (SDDs), Architecture Decision Records
(ADRs), integration specifications, and migration blueprints.
-
Ensure designs follow ServiceNow best practices, platform guardrails, and
multi-instance architecture standards.
2. Requirement Analysis & Business Alignment
-
Conduct requirement gathering sessions with business stakeholders, SMEs,
product owners, and users.
-
Map legacy features/functions to corresponding ServiceNow modules and
capabilities.
-
Identify gaps and design extensible, configurable, low-code solutions using
native ServiceNow features.
-
Translate business needs into functional/technical design artifacts.
3. Legacy-to-ServiceNow Migration Planning
-
Define detailed migration strategies (phased, big-bang, module-wise).
-
Design data migration architecture including mapping, transformation,
cleansing, validation, and reconciliation.
-
Create migration runbooks, test plans, cutover checklists, and validation
scripts.
-
Assess and mitigate migration risks such as data loss, workflow continuity,
and dependency conflicts.
4. Integration Architecture
-
Design integrations between ServiceNow and enterprise systems such as ERP,
CRM, ticketing tools, identity providers, middleware, APIs, and data lakes.
-
Use IntegrationHub, spokes, REST/SOAP APIs, MID Server, ETL tools, or custom
integration patterns.
-
Define interface contracts, data schemas, authentication methods, and
operational SLAs.
5. Technical Leadership
-
Guide development teams (ServiceNow developers, integration engineers, QA,
platform engineers).
-
Review and approve technical designs, stories, and implementation details.
-
Ensure development aligns with architectural principles, performance
guidelines, and ServiceNow coding standards.
-
Collaborate with platform owners for environment strategy, performance
tuning, and upgrade planning.
6. Quality Assurance & Governance
-
Establish design governance, platform best practices, reuse frameworks, and
naming conventions.
-
Conduct design walkthroughs, code reviews, integration validations, and UAT
readiness checks.
-
Ensure compliance with security standards, data privacy policies, and
regulatory requirements.
7. Stakeholder & Project Coordination
-
Collaborate closely with project managers, business owners, architects, and
technical teams.
-
Provide technical inputs for project plans, backlog prioritization, release
planning, and deployment scheduling.
-
Present solution options, risks, and recommendations to leadership and
architecture boards.
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Skills:
-
6–12 years of experience in enterprise application design, preferably in
complex migration or transformation programs.
-
Strong expertise in at least 3 ServiceNow modules (ITSM, CSM, ITOM, ITAM,
SPM, HRSD, Order Management, SOMT).
-
Experience designing solutions for large-scale migration from legacy or
monolithic applications.
-
Proficiency in ServiceNow data models, workflows, scripting, ACLs, Flow
Designer, IntegrationHub, MID Server.
-
Deep understanding of modern integration patterns (REST, SOAP, OAuth, SAML,
message queues, event-driven).
-
Good understanding of Agile/Scrum delivery models.
