Principal Analog Engineer
Job Description
This is an Individual Contributor technical leadership role for a professional with 15+ years of experience in analog and power IC development within Renesas's $2.6B Power Business Unit. The role leads the end-to-end design and development of power management ICs, including voltage regulators, linear and switching DC-DC converters and related components, from specifications through PRA and production readiness. The successful candidate will collaborate across functions to integrate ICs into larger systems, deliver successful silicon and mentor junior engineers. This role is fully focused on product and technical development and does not include people-management responsibility.
Essential Functions
Power IC Leadership & Product Execution
• Must have led the development of multiple power ICs with switching converters, from system-level specifications through production. • Identify and resolve technical challenges and risks while ensuring high-quality silicon and adherence to business schedules. • Architect the IC, translate system and chip-top requirements into block-level specifications, lead integration and ensure target performance. • Lead silicon debug, root-cause analysis, design-to-silicon correlation, qualification support and production readiness.
Converter, Device & Control-Loop Expertise
• Be proficient in complete switching-converter design and associated IPs, including high-current and high-power challenges such as noise and power dissipation and their mitigation. • Demonstrate strong understanding of power-device operation, design trade-offs, performance and reliability. • Possess in-depth expertise in control-loop architecture, selection, design and compensation for target performance. • Understand commonly used architectures including constant frequency, constant on/off time and current mode, with the advantages and limitations of each. • Bring innovative ideas to meet challenging specifications and improve system performance.
Analog IP & Protection Blocks
• Lead and guide the development and integration of positive and negative charge pumps, source-sink LDOs, ultra-low-power oscillators including relaxation types, temperature sensors, current-sense circuits, SAR ADCs and housekeeping blocks. • Guide protection design for thermal, under-voltage, over-voltage and over-current conditions. • Demonstrate expertise in bandgap references, V2I circuits, analog buffers, op-amps, comparators, high-speed level shifters and switch-capacitor circuits. • Provide in-depth guidance on ESD, latch-up and other IC-level issues, including protection definition for the I/O ring.
Layout, Simulation & Design Methodology
• Guide analog and FET layout development from floor planning through chip-top completion and verification, including noise-isolation techniques and performance trade-offs. • Be conversant with standard design, extraction and simulation flows and tools, including speed, convergence and accuracy trade-offs. • Optimize pre- and post-layout simulation setups, with or without parasitics, use simulator options effectively and navigate tool-related challenges. • Establish design flows, methodologies, checklists and reviews that drive quality from concept through silicon success.
Technical Leadership & Collaboration
• Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to support successful integration of ICs into larger systems. • Provide technical expertise and mentorship to freshers and junior engineers, improving both technical capability and overall effectiveness. • Lead groups of engineers through IC-development stages through technical influence while remaining in an Individual Contributor role. • Foster a creative, collaborative and highly productive engineering environment.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements • Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering. • 15+ years of experience in analog circuit design and analog/power IC development . • Solid understanding and hands-on design experience in complex analog designs with full ownership. • Experience across chip design, verification, silicon validation, debug, qualification support and taking ICs to production. • Proven technical leadership, strong team collaboration and a demonstrated ability to mentor engineers.
